چکیده

The relationship between ocean wind vectors and L-band normalized radar cross sections (NRCS) is comprehensively examined to propose an L-band model function by using the Phased-Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) and scatterometer wind data. Based on more than 90,000 match-ups, the L-band NRCS dependence on wind speed, incidence angle, and relative wind direction is modeled for the 0-20 m/s wind speed and 17-43o incidence angle ranges. Wind speeds are then inversely estimated from the mutch-ups and compared with the reference winds, resulting in the -0.16 m/s bias and 2.31 m/s root mean square (rms) error. Crosswind data show poor estimation, probably due to the NRCS-wind relation temporarily saturated around 10 m/s.

Preliminary Study on Developing an L-band Wind Retrieval Model Function Using Alos/palsar

The relationship between ocean wind vectors and Lband normalized radar cross sections (NRCS) is examined using the Phased-Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR). We used PALSAR ScanSAR images with a wide range of incidence angles from 17o to 43o. More than 6,000 match-ups, each consisting of the NRCS, incidence angles, wind speeds and wind directions, were collected. The NRCS exhibits a...

Author Guidelines for 8

An empirical relation between normalized radar cross sections (NRCS) and wind vectors, known as the geophysical model function (GMF), has been established for specific wavelengths, such as Ku-band and C-band, by using scatterometermeasured NRCS and buoy or model winds [1][2]. On the contrary, L-band NRCS dependence on wind fields has been investigated by using airborne and spaceborne Synthetic ...

Modeling of Microwave Backscattering from a Rough Sea Surface with Steep Waves

Traditionally, Kuand C-band radars are used in ocean scatterometry to retrieve an ocean wind vector. Examples are QuikSCAT and ASCAT satellites. Recently, attempts have been made to use X-band SAR aboard the German TerraSAR-X satellite for the same purpose [1]. Usually, wind retrieval is performed using empirical Geophysical Model Functions (GMF). In the past, a set of GMFs have been designed b...

Technical Evaluation of Sentinel-1 IW Mode Cross-Pol Radar Backscattering from the Ocean Surface in Moderate Wind Condition

The Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) allows sufficient resources for cross-pol wind speed retrievals over the ocean. In this paper, we present technical evaluation on wind retrieval from both Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B IW cross-pol images. Algorithms are based on the existing theoretical and empirical ones derived from the RADARSAT-2 cross-pol data. First, to better understand the Sen...

Sea Surface Wind Retrievals from SIR-C/X-SAR Data: A Revisit

The Geophysical Model Function (GMF) XMOD1 provides a linear algorithm for sea surface wind field retrievals for the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR). However, the relationship between the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) and the sea surface wind speed, wind direction and incidence angles is non-linear. Therefore, in this paper, XMOD1 is revisited us...
